Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg presents exhibitions of contemporary art for the enjoyment of the public in a unique and historic setting. The Schloss, situated near Hannover, has a history that stretches back almost one thousand years. For centuries it was a convent and later a monastery. In the 19th Century it became the residence of the Dukes of Münster who commissioned the renowned Hanoverian architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves to convert it to a stately home. Artist Georg Baselitz acquired the property in the 1970s and it became his residence and studio for approximately thirty years until its sale in 2006. Since then, the Schloss has been reunited with the adjacent domain and both are undergoing extensive renovations to become one of the largest privately owned public museums for contemporary art in Europe.

*Notice - new visitor program from spring 2025*
In 2025, Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg (KSD) will transition to a guided, tour-based visitor program. This will allow the museum to focus on completing the renovation of the castle and the other buildings on the estate. Additional exhibition areas, improved visitor infrastructure, and many new additions to the already extensive sculpture park will be completed over the next three to four years.
During this time, KSD will continue to present an evolving series of world-class art exhibitions in the unique historic setting of Schloss Derneburg. Visitors can register for guided tours on our website or by emailing Visitor Services. The first guided tours are expected to be offered in March 2025.
